Portree Boat Trips and Eagles

Written by Chris

There are a couple of good boat trips out of Portree where it is possible to get some great views of White-tailed sea eagles and other wildlife.  The operators know where the eagles will typically sit along the coast, both on Skye and also Raasay, and there is a good chance of getting some amazing views and photos.  Incidentally they also take you to the seal colony out on Raasay where again you can get pretty close.

The collection below was taken from such a trip in October this year when the Eagles came in to collect fish thrown from one of the boats.  These photos were taken using a Canon 400mm f5.6 lens with a slight crop, so you can get an idea as to how close they come.  Click the image to see a larger version.

  • Take a look at Portree Boat Trips and Stardust Portree Boat Trips for more info, can thoroughly recommend either, and both boats were together when these pictures were taken.  Both operators follow the WiSe code of conduct for wildlife watching.

In my last post I took a trip back in Skye's history to look at the ruined Church at Kilmuir just outside Dunvegan.  For this post I thought it would be interesting to go even further back in time to the Iron Age.

Have lived on Skye for nearly 6 years and every now and then we get to catch up with some Dolphins. Looking for Otters spotted a white wave in the distance. The water was like a duck pond so had to be something swimming! And there they were!
