Short-eared Owls

Written by Chris

Recently visited the Western Isles, staying on North Uist and touring around.  Reading the guestbook in the cottage, there were lots of references to guests having seen Hen Harriers, Short-eared Owls and Corncrakes from the cottage itself.  No such luck with the Corncrakes, it was a little late in the year for them to still be around, but we did have success with both the other two species.  We soon learned that it is possible to see these beautiful birds practically anywhere on the Uists and we had a particular favourite route along the Committee Road from Claddach Kirkibost to Malacleit.

Here are some images of a very accommodating Owl, hunting near the road.  Images taken using a Canon 40D with 400mm f5.6 Prime lens with a slight crop.

In my last post I took a trip back in Skye's history to look at the ruined Church at Kilmuir just outside Dunvegan.  For this post I thought it would be interesting to go even further back in time to the Iron Age.

There are a couple of good boat trips out of Portree where it is possible to get some great views of White-tailed sea eagles and other wildlife.

Have lived on Skye for nearly 6 years and every now and then we get to catch up with some Dolphins. Looking for Otters spotted a white wave in the distance. The water was like a duck pond so had to be something swimming! And there they were!

The Quiraing on Skye is one of the most recognisable locations from the island appearing in dozens of photographs and films.  A trip at dawn to get some sunrise pictures.
